Pet birds killed in rural Derby house fire | Wichita Eagle

A fire heavily damaged a house and killed numerous pets east of Derby on Sunday afternoon, authorities said.

The fire was reported at 12:20 p.m. in a rural area near 79th Street South and 143rd Street East, a Sedgwick County dispatch supervisor said. It took fire crews more than four hours to extinguish flames that had spread throughout the structure.

No people were injured in the fire, but a Sedgwick County Fire Department official told media at the scene that more than a dozen birds died.

A cause and damage estimate have not been released.
