Welcome to this week?s iOS Hot List. Let?s take a look at what?s popular and new on Apple?s App Store:
Midway Arcade (?0.69/$0.99, Warner Bros.) Universal
A few weeks ago, a retro-themed iOS hotlist featured Atari?s Greatest Hits, a collection of Atari arcade and Atari 2600 games that wasn?t best received by iPhone/iPad gamers due to its somewhat hefty price tag and poor game selection. These players will be happy to know that Midway Arcade does not suffer from the same shortcomings. For only ?0.69/$0.99, you receive a small selection of some absolutely cracking retro arcade titles, such as Spy Hunter, Rampage, Root Beer Tapper and Defender. There are some other ?arcade favourites? like pool and air hockey, too.
Everything here is neatly displayed in a virtual arcade, where you travel from cabinet to cabinet, reliving the golden age of gaming. Players earn tickets with which they can unlock collectible items and can play game music via the jukebox feature. There are two in-app purchases for extra games, which, for the mere price of ?0.69/$0.99, give you access to more great titles, such as Gauntlet, NARC, APB. Midway Arcade is a gaming history lesson worth taking.

Mafia Rush (Free, Chillingo) Universal
As you?re probably aware from reading previous iOS Hot Lists, here at BNBGAMING, we have a real appreciation for interesting, kooky and generally different art styles in games. So naturally, it?s only fair that I give Mafia Rush the respect it deserves. As Don Macaroni, feared gangster and all-out tough guy, players must run around small but comical maps in order to grab as much loot as they can in a sequence of daring bank robberies. If you played Ice Rage, which featured in our Retro Hot List, then the likelihood is that Mafia Rush?s cool and humourous style will appeal to you.
What, unfortunately, might not appeal to some players are the sometimes flawed controls. Simple though they are, with the use of a dual-joystick system, there?s a lot of times when Don Macaroni would not move in the way I wished he would, and would not shoot his gun at the enemies I was aiming for. The problem is that it seems Mafia Rush wants to predict where you want to shoot, but more often that not, it is wildly incorrect. The game is still playable, and out of the four modes (survival, attack, defend and robbery), there was not a single moment I didn?t thoroughly enjoy, but Mafia Rush will probably not feel comfortable with most players who simply want to play a game that knows what it?s doing.

Pizza Vs. Skeletons (?1.99/$2.99, Riverman Media) Universal
Another game that?s a hit on the App Store this week, Pizza Vs. Skeletons, like Mafia Rush, has a pretty fresh style and very original gameplay. It?s called Pizza Vs. Skeletons, after all. By leaning your iOS device from side to side, you control a rolling pizza with an angry expression, as it tries to kill not just skeletons, but all manner of ghoulish beings. Coupled with the fun variations of levels, including a great Angry Birds-style level, ski-sloping levels and tons of other great and original challenges, and the fact that you can customise your pizza to have any topping, clothing and face you want, Pizza Vs. Skeletons is pretty much all about the random fun.
Pizza Vs. Skeletons has a beautiful art style that looks like it?s been sketched for something more than a hilariously random series of levels. It?s well-designed, interesting to look at, and frankly, it?s almost a shame that a style so wonderful is overtaken by the game?s humour. However, it?s still clear to see the effort that has gone into this game, and so I would have to say that, despite the pricetag, Pizza Vs. Skeletons is one of the most fun games I?ve played this week.

Robber Rabbits! (?0.69/$0.99, Alawar Entertainment) iPad
Robber Rabbits! has just about escaped my wrath for being another Angry Birds clone. Just about, but not entirely. Despite opening with a similar sequence of still cartoons that try to narrate the circumstances leading up to players getting on with the game, and despite the catapult style of play which requires players to shoot obstacles to get to the treasure held within a bank vault, Robber Rabbits! just falls short of being a complete ripoff of the Rovio hit game.
Despite its glaring similarities, there are some aspects of Robbing Rabbits! that hold merit ? it is a fun game to play, it provides a challenge that is somewhat different to what Angry Birds provides, in that it?s less of a catapult- and more of a gunfire-styled game. But it?s just frustrating to have played one game, then play another that holds so many similar ideas, tweaked just about enough to stop it being pulled from the App Store. If you?ve already got Angry Birds on your iPhone, just start playing it again, instead of wasting more money on another striving title like Robber Rabbits!.
